Chapel Hill and Carrboro are one place with two names: a college town and the smaller, scruffier town that grew up on its western edge. Together they are 30 minutes from Raleigh and the best day trip in the Triangle when you want to walk, eat and hear live music without a plan. I grew up coming here for games and I still come for the arboretum and the coffee.
Quick orientation: Franklin Street is the main drag along the north edge of UNC’s campus. Walk it west and it turns into Main Street, Carrboro without you noticing. Park in a deck off Rosemary Street or at the Carrboro Town Commons and walk; parking on game days is its own sport.
The best things to do in Chapel Hill and Carrboro
Walk UNC’s campus
The oldest public university in the country, and it looks the part. Start at the Old Well, cross McCorkle Place under the oaks, and end at the Bell Tower. The Coker Arboretum is a five-acre garden tucked behind the Morehead Planetarium and the quietest spot in town. All of it is free and open to the public.
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center
Where the Apollo astronauts trained in celestial navigation. Star shows in the dome, hands-on exhibits for kids, and a great rainy-day option. Tickets are cheap and the shows sell out on school breaks.
Ackland Art Museum
UNC’s art museum on Franklin Street, free, and small enough to see in an hour. The Asian art collection is the strength, and the rotating exhibitions are usually worth the trip on their own.
North Carolina Botanical Garden
Native plants of the Southeast on 1,100 acres south of campus, with easy trails, a carnivorous plant collection and the Piedmont Nature Trails behind it. Free, and better in spring and fall than the crowds at Duke Gardens.
Franklin Street
The college strip: cheap pizza, the record store, the famous ice cream, a proper bookstore and bars that have been there since your parents were students. It is at its best on a fall Saturday and at its wildest on Halloween and after a Duke win.
Carrboro’s Main Street
Carrboro is the Triangle’s music town. Cat’s Cradle has hosted everyone since 1969 and still books bands two years before they get big. Weaver Street Market’s lawn is the town living room, with live music on weekend mornings. The Carrboro Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings is one of the oldest and best in the state.
Games and the Dean Dome
Basketball at the Dean E. Smith Center is the hardest ticket in the state; football at Kenan Stadium is the easiest way to feel the place. Both are worth doing once even if you did not go here. Baseball at Boshamer Stadium in spring is the sleeper pick, cheap and sunny.
Trails and the lake
Bolin Creek Trail runs from Chapel Hill into Carrboro along the creek and is the easy walk. University Lake rents canoes and kayaks in season. Occoneechee Mountain in Hillsborough, 15 minutes north, is the best short hike in the area with a real overlook.
The food
Chapel Hill and Carrboro have a long head start on farm-to-table cooking, and the good stuff is spread across both towns. I keep current picks in the posts below; the short version is that the best meals here are on Franklin Street’s west end and in the small storefronts off Carrboro’s Main.
Events to plan around
- Carrboro Music Festival, late September, more than 100 free sets across downtown Carrboro.
- Festifall, October, Chapel Hill’s arts festival on West Franklin.
- Halloween on Franklin Street, October 31, the Triangle’s biggest street party.
- Carrboro Film Festival, November.
- Holiday parade and tree lighting, December, downtown Chapel Hill.
- UNC Science Expo, April, campus-wide and free.
- Tar Heel 10 Miler, April, the run that finishes on Kenan Stadium’s field.
Neighborhoods to know
Downtown Carrboro is the walkable one. Historic District and Gimghoul are the old streets east of campus with the big houses. Southern Village is the planned neighborhood with its own main street and green south of town. Meadowmont is similar toward Durham. Northside, north of Rosemary Street, is the historic Black neighborhood with a deep community history worth reading about.
