Wendell doubled in size between 2020 and 2025 and is now the fastest-growing municipality in North Carolina, and somehow Main Street still feels like 1950 in the best way. I wrote about how those two things coexist. This page is the practical version: what to do when you get there, 15 miles east of downtown Raleigh on US 64.

Start with these

The best things to do in Wendell

Downtown Main Street

Three blocks of brick storefronts from 1906 to 1947 at Main and Third, along the old Raleigh and Pamlico rail line, on the National Register since 1998. There is a mural trail, the Wendell General Store, 41 North Coffee, Ash and Dill Gastropub, and Aubrey’s and Peedie’s Grill for the kind of breakfast that has not changed in decades. Park once and walk.

Two breweries a block apart

Bearded Bee Brewing (20 E Campen St) opened in 2020 and quickly became the town’s living room: honey-forward beers and mead, trivia, live music and food trucks. Carolina Brewing Company opened its second taproom right on Main Street (5 N Main St) with 20 taps, cocktails and a patio. More on both in the south Wake brewery guide.

Robertson Millpond Preserve

The single most underrated outdoor spot in Wake County. An 85-acre county preserve at 6333 Robertson Pond Rd with a marked paddling trail through a blackwater cypress-gum swamp, the kind of landscape you expect on the coast, not 20 minutes from Raleigh. Boat rentals, fishing, a historic dam. Open 8am to sunset. Go in October when the cypress turns.

Wendell Falls and the Farmhouse Cafe

The 1,700-acre planned community that is driving most of the growth, with more than 10 miles of trails, Treelight Square shops and the Farmhouse Cafe (320 Vintage Point Ln) for breakfast and lunch. Friday Front Porch Jams and the Tuesday run club are open to everyone, not just residents.

Wendell Park

The town’s largest park at 601 W Third St: fields, playground, disc golf, dog park, tennis and pickleball, picnic shelters. One heads-up: the trails are closed through the Buffalo Creek Greenway construction that started in May 2026, so check before you go for a walk.

Turnipseed Nature Preserve

A 265-acre county preserve known for granite outcrops and boulders, with hiking and biking trails. Quieter than Umstead and a good half day.

Lake Myra

A 60-acre lake with frontage on the Wendell Falls side. It hosts the Christmas light show during Wendell Wonderland, and Wake County’s 311-acre Lake Myra County Park (park center, boardwalks, boating) is slated to open its first phase in 2027. Worth watching.

Wendell Museum

Volunteer-run at 122 W 2nd St, open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5pm. The town was settled in the 1850s by Granville County tobacco farmers fleeing crop blight and named for Oliver Wendell Holmes, and the photo library here tells that story better than anywhere.

Events to plan around

  • Wendell Harvest Festival, first Saturday in October, downtown, 9am to 9pm. The 2026 edition is the 98th. Parade at 10am, vendors, kids village, evening concert.
  • Wendell Market, an evening producers-only farmers market on Campen St, first Tuesday of the month, 5:30 to 8:30pm, April through November.
  • Wendell Wonderland, first Friday in December: tree lighting around 6pm at J. Ashley Wall Town Square, Santa, trolley rides and the Lake Myra light show.
  • Fireworks Show, early July at Wendell Park, with a concert at 7pm and a golf cart and bike parade.
  • Halloween Treat Trail downtown in October.

Neighborhoods to know

The Wendell Commercial Historic District is downtown proper. The Wendell Boulevard Historic District is the old residential heart: Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalows from the 1890s to the 1950s along Wendell Blvd, Mattox St and Old Zebulon Rd. Wendell Falls is the growth engine, with Treelight Square, a WakeMed Healthplex and Lake Myra frontage. Subdivisions like Edgemont Landing and Anderson Farm off US 64 sit between the two worlds.
