She started it on Instagram in 2020 to spotlight what local businesses were doing, and it grew into a guide to the whole Triangle: weekend plans, new openings, parks and patios, and the small businesses worth your money. Raleigh International Wine and Beer Festival, Saturday October 17, City Plaza, downtown Raleigh

Mark Saturday, October 17 on your calendar if you like a good glass of something and a good people-watching spot. The Raleigh International Wine and Beer Festival takes over City Plaza on Fayetteville Street from noon to 8 p.m., and getting in is free.

What the Raleigh International Wine and Beer Festival is

This is the fifth year for the festival, put on by NC Vibes, and this edition leans into Oktoberfest. You can sample wines and beers from about 15 countries, grab food from international vendors, and hang around for live music all day. It is downtown, outdoors, and easy to drop into for an hour or stay for the whole afternoon.

The free part matters. Festival entry costs nothing, and that includes the live music, the food vendors, a costume contest, and a Passport Challenge activity with prizes. You only pay if you want to taste.

What costs extra

The organizers sell a few ways to drink, so you can pick what suits you. According to the Eventbrite page, the options are the Explorer Passport tasting package, the Connoisseur Experience (a tasting plus a souvenir glass), individual glasses under the Wine Lover option, and bottle purchases through the Cellar Collection. I would start with a tasting package if you want to try a lot of countries, and buy a glass if you find one you love. Prices are listed on the Eventbrite page, and the Visit Raleigh listing asks guests to RSVP.

Things to do while you are there

Pick up a Passport Challenge and work your way around the countries. Vote in the People’s Choice competition for your favorite pour. And if you like a theme, the costume contest welcomes Halloween, Oktoberfest, or international-inspired outfits. A dirndl, a witch hat, and a kimono are all fair game, as far as the rules read.

Why I like this one

Downtown Raleigh in the fall is hard to beat, and a festival on Fayetteville Street means you can pair it with the rest of your Saturday. Walk over from a museum, a coffee stop, or an early lunch, then end the day with live music in the plaza. Because admission is free, it works as a low-pressure outing with friends, a first date, or a visiting relative who wants to see something local. You can sip a few international pours, try food you might not cook at home, and still be done in time for dinner. If the weather turns, check the event page the morning of for any updates before you head downtown.

How I would plan it

Go earlier in the afternoon if you want a table and shorter lines, and come back in the evening for the music. Eat before you taste, drink water between pours, and plan a ride home or use transit so everyone gets back safely. The listings do not spell out age or pet rules, so check with the organizers before you bring a plus-one who is under 21 or on four legs.
