When the holidays roll in, most of us are thinking about cozy meals, festive gatherings, and time with the people we love. But across Central and Eastern North Carolina, thousands of our neighbors are facing food insecurity, and the need doesn’t magically disappear when the lights and tinsel go up.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC (FBCENC) serves 34 counties across our region. They distribute millions of meals each year to families, children, seniors, and individuals who need a little extra support. And right now, they need us just as much as our community needs them.

If you have ever wondered how to help in a meaningful way, here are simple, high-impact ways to support the Food Bank this season and beyond.

1. Donate Funds

One of the most powerful ways to support the Food Bank is through monetary donations.
For every one dollar donated, the Food Bank can provide up to five meals. Your contribution stretches further because they can purchase food at scale, partner with farmers, and reduce waste.

Whether it is a one-time gift or a monthly contribution, financial donations help ensure the Food Bank can respond quickly when needs rise, especially around the holidays.

3. Host a Food Drive With Friends, Neighbors, or Your Workplace

If you love a community project, organizing a food drive is an impactful way to rally the people in your circle.
You can collect shelf-stable items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Canned proteins
  • Baby formula
  • Hygiene items

Then drop them off at one of the Food Bank’s branches or partner agencies.

Want to go bigger? Try a neighborhood drive, a classroom challenge, or a workplace competition. It is fun, energizing, and directly supports local families.

4. Volunteer Your Time

The Food Bank relies heavily on volunteers to sort, pack, and distribute food. No special skills are required. You simply show up and help your community.

Volunteer shifts are available for:

  • Sorting and packing food
  • Assisting with distribution
  • Loading cars during mobile markets
  • Supporting special holiday events

It is a meaningful way to make an impact, meet new people, and involve your kids or coworkers.

5. Give Fresh Food From Your Garden or Shop Local

The Food Bank accepts fresh produce too.
If you have a home garden, a backyard bounty, or a few extra vegetables from a local farm box, you can donate those as well.

Supporting local farmers while feeding the community is a win for everyone.

6. Advocate for Food Access

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is use your voice.

Advocate for:

  • Stronger food access programs
  • School meal support
  • Policies that reduce hunger
  • Funding for local hunger relief

You can also share posts, educate your friends, and encourage your city leaders to prioritize community well-being.

7. Spread Awareness

Sharing the Food Bank’s mission helps connect more people to resources or inspires others to give.
A simple share on Instagram, a mention in your workplace Slack, or an invite to volunteer with you makes a difference.

Your voice has reach. Use it to help your neighbors.

8. Make It a Family or Friend Tradition

Giving back becomes even more meaningful when you turn it into something you look forward to each year.

Ideas include:

  • A holiday volunteer shift with friends
  • A reverse advent calendar where you add one food item each day to donate
  • A family or neighborhood food-drive day
  • A Friendsgiving meal where everyone brings donation items for the Food Bank

Small traditions can spark big change.
