A Slow Saturday in Garner: Depot, Coffee, and a Lake Walk

A winding paved greenway path through trees, the kind of walk you will find in Garner and around the Triangle

Kelly is a Raleigh native and the one person behind The Raleigh Local. She started it on Instagram in 2020 to spotlight what local businesses were doing, and it grew into a guide to the whole Triangle: weekend plans, new openings, parks and patios, and the small businesses worth your money. If it is on this site, she would send a friend there.

If you are looking for things to do in Garner NC, here is the short version: it is one of the easiest places in the Triangle to spend a slow Saturday. There is a real downtown with a train depot, a coffee roaster in an old bank building, and two big parks a few minutes apart. It sits right below Raleigh, so you can get there fast, and it rarely gets the attention it deserves. Here is how I would spend the day.

Start Downtown With Coffee

Historic downtown Garner is compact and walkable, which makes it a good place to park once and wander. Start at Full Bloom Coffee Roasters at 141 West Main Street. It is housed in the circa-1910 former Bank of Garner building and roasts its own coffee, so you are getting a cup in a building with some history behind it.

A couple of doors down, Nana’s Lil Sweets at 105 West Main Street makes custom cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and scones. Grab something for the walk. As with any small shop, check their social pages for current hours before you head over.

Visit the Garner History Museum at the Depot

The Garner History Museum at the Depot is at 106 Pearl Street, inside a restored 1900 train station. Inside are local artifacts and exhibits, including the town’s first post office desk, and outside is a 1950s Norfolk Southern caboose. The Garner Area Historical Society runs it with volunteers and is currently raising money to restore that caboose.

The current posted hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m., so plan your day around that window. It is a small museum, which is exactly why it works as a 30-minute stop between coffee and a walk. Confirm hours on the museum’s website before you go.

Take a Walk at Lake Benson Park

Lake Benson Park at 921 Buffaloe Road covers 64 acres and has a bit of everything: fishing, walking trails, playgrounds, a dog park, and the Garner Veterans Memorial. It is an easy pick if you are bringing kids or a dog. If you are building a bigger parks day, my guide to the best parks and playgrounds for kids in the Triangle has more ideas.

Next door in feel, if not in address, is White Deer Park at 2400 Aversboro Road, a 96-acre town park with trails that connect toward Lake Benson. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. One thing to know for fall: the park’s nature center, with its resident corn snakes, turtles, and mounted local wildlife, is closed October through March, and it is closed Sundays and Mondays during its April to September season. So this time of year, come for the trails and save the nature center for spring.

Eat Something Southern

For a proper sit-down meal, Angie’s Restaurant at 1340 West Garner Road serves Southern comfort food, with fried pork chops, hush puppies, and chicken salad among the things it is known for. It is the kind of place that fits the rest of this day: unfussy, local, and worth the short drive from downtown.

Add a Show or a Pint

If you want to stretch the day into the evening, check the calendar at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 West Garner Road, which hosts music, dance, and theater in the town’s old high school building. And Garner is part of a growing craft beer scene across the southern end of the county, which I covered in my ranking of every brewery in south Wake County.

Why Garner Is Worth the Drive

Garner does not try to be a destination the way some Triangle towns do, and that is part of the charm. You can do all of this in an afternoon without a reservation or a line. For more ideas around the area, my things to do in Raleigh this weekend page is refreshed every week and covers the wider Triangle.
